Field hornwort (Anthoceros agrestis) is a species of hornwort in the family Anthocerotaceae. Unlike vascular crops, this plant is a bryophyte consisting of a simple thallus that lacks true vascular tissues, roots, or leaves. It represents a primitive but ecologically significant group of plants often found in specific agricultural microhabitats where moisture is abundant.

The distribution of Anthoceros agrestis covers temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. While not a cultivated crop, it frequently appears as a pioneer species in moist, compacted agricultural lands, fallow fields, and near irrigation ditches. It thrives in soils that may have poor drainage or those that remain damp for extended periods during the growing season.

Botanically, the plant features a dark green, rosette-like thallus that adheres closely to the soil surface. Its most distinct feature is the presence of long, needle-like sporophytes that emerge from the thallus. Furthermore, the plant maintains a symbiotic relationship with Nostoc cyanobacteria, which fix nitrogen within the thallus cavities, providing the hornwort with a nutritional advantage in low-nutrient environments.

Regarding agricultural requirements, the species is highly sensitive to soil disturbance. Routine tillage, drainage improvements, and the use of broad-spectrum herbicides significantly reduce its population. It does not tolerate shade well, so it is typically crowded out by faster-growing commercial crops, appearing mainly in areas of low crop density or post-harvest fields.

The economic and ecological utility of the field hornwort is primarily linked to soil management:

  • Acts as a biological indicator of excessive soil moisture and compaction.
  • Contributes to nitrogen enrichment in the topsoil through cyanobacterial symbiosis.
