The plant originates from the tropical regions of West Africa, specifically Cameroon. In its native habitat, it is found in shaded areas along riverbanks, thriving in high-humidity environments. Its natural growth pattern involves attaching to rocks or submerged wood, which has defined its cultivation requirements in controlled agricultural settings.
Botanically, this species is characterized by a creeping rhizome and thick, leathery, heart-shaped leaves. Unlike many fast-growing agricultural crops, Anubias possesses a very slow growth rate. This slow development contributes to its resilience, allowing it to withstand a variety of water parameters that would typically stress other aquatic flora.
Cultivation practices require careful attention to light exposure and substrate quality. It is essential to avoid direct, intense light to prevent the growth of epiphyte algae on the leaves.
