Fool's watercress

It is a semi-aquatic species, often found in habitats such as stream banks, ditches, and marshy grounds. The plant is characterized by its hollow stems and pinnately compound leaves, closely resembling common watercress, which often leads to confusion between the two species.

The native distribution of this plant spans across Western and Southern Europe, the Mediterranean region, and parts of Northwest Africa. It thrives in temperate maritime climates where winter temperatures do not cause deep soil freezing. As a crop, it requires specific environmental conditions that mimic its natural wetland habitats to reach optimal productivity.

Botanically, Apium nodiflorum is distinguished by its creeping stems that produce roots at the nodes, facilitating rapid colonization of wet surfaces. Its flowering stage occurs during the summer months, producing clusters of small white flowers arranged in umbels.
