It is globally recognized as the primary source of agarwood (oud), a rare and highly valued resinous wood formed when the tree defends itself against fungal infection.

The natural habitat of this species encompasses the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, specifically regions within India, Bangladesh, and the Indochinese Peninsula. The plant flourishes in humid tropical climates where temperatures remain consistently warm and precipitation is abundant, which is critical for its biological development.

Botanically, the tree is characterized by its evergreen foliage and relatively slow growth rate. The inner heartwood of the tree is normally pale and odourless; however, when the tree is attacked by Phialophora parasitica or similar fungi, it produces a dark, aromatic resin. This specific biological response is the core economic factor that makes this species so valuable to the agriculture and fragrance industries.

Regarding cultivation, Aquilaria agallocha requires rich, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic profile. Plantation management is complex and involves careful site selection, artificial shade for saplings, and the precise, controlled inoculation of mature trees to stimulate the production of the resinous heartwood. Effective plantation management often spans over a decade before the first harvest can be achieved.

The primary economic use of this plant is the production of oud oil and incense. The oil is a staple in high-end perfumery due to its complex, long-lasting scent.
