Khat

Catha edulis (Vahl) Forssk. ex Endl.

Description

Khat (Catha edulis) is an evergreen shrub or tree belonging to the Celastraceae family. This perennial plant is known for its slow growth rate but high resilience in challenging environments, often reaching a height of up to 5 meters depending on the specific environmental conditions.

Originating from the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, the plant is well-adapted to high-altitude regions. It thrives in tropical climates where the altitude ranges from 1,000 to 2,500 meters, which provides the optimal thermal conditions for its development and the concentration of its active chemical compounds.

Botanically, Catha edulis is characterized by its elliptical, leathery leaves and small, white-petaled flowers arranged in spikes. The root system is robust and deep-reaching, enabling the plant to survive in semi-arid conditions by accessing groundwater, which is essential for its survival during dry seasons.

From an agronomical perspective, Khat requires well-drained, fertile soil, ideally with a neutral pH. The cultivation process involves regular pruning to encourage bushy growth and maximize leaf yield. It is highly sensitive to frost, necessitating protection if the temperature drops significantly, and requires moderate irrigation.

The primary agricultural output is the foliage, which is harvested for various uses. Farmers typically manage plantations using organic fertilizers to maintain soil health. Please note that the cultivation of Catha edulis is heavily regulated or prohibited in many jurisdictions worldwide due to the active alkaloids present in its tissues.

  • Common pests: red spider mites, aphids.
  • Common diseases: root rot due to waterlogging, fungal leaf spots.
  • Sunlight requirements: full sun to partial shade.
