Steller's rock cress

Steller's rock cress (Latin: Arabis stelleri) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Brassicaceae (mustard) family. Known for its mat-forming growth habit, this species is highly valued in horticulture for its ability to cover bare ground with lush foliage and delicate spring blossoms, making it a perfect candidate for rock gardens.

The plant originates from East Asia, with a natural range encompassing the Russian Far East, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula. It thrives in high-altitude environments, rocky outcrops, and gravelly soils. This evolutionary history has provided the plant with significant resilience, allowing it to withstand harsh winters and variable moisture levels typical of mountainous terrain.

Botanically, Steller's rock cress is characterized by a basal rosette of pubescent leaves that protect the plant against desiccation. The flowering stems produce four-petaled, white, or pale pink flowers in terminal racemes. The plant's growth is relatively slow but persistent, forming dense colonies that effectively suppress weeds in landscaped areas.
