Standish's shield fern (Arachniodes standishii) is a perennial fern species belonging to the family Dryopteridaceae. Often referred to as "Upside-down fern" due to its distinct frond orientation in some variations, it is a highly regarded ornamental plant in horticulture for its vibrant, lustrous foliage.
Native to East Asia, specifically Japan and parts of China, this species is well-adapted to cool, humid, and shaded forest environments. Its natural habitat is characterized by nutrient-rich forest floors and slopes, which dictates its preferences when used as a garden or landscape crop in temperate zones across the world.
Botanically, the plant is known for its wide, bipinnate to tripinnate fronds that emerge in a radial pattern from a rhizome. The segments of the fronds are notably shiny and have a leathery texture, giving the plant a refined look. The plant typically grows to a height of approximately 60–90 cm, providing a lush, green aesthetic to shaded planting beds.
Regarding cultural requirements, the plant thrives in well-drained but consistently moist soil. It is essential to maintain high levels of organic matter in the planting site, ideally with a slightly acidic pH. The plant is considered shade-tolerant but performs best in dappled light, as intense sunlight can dehydrate the fronds and lead to premature yellowing or necrosis.
