Originating from the western Mediterranean region, the species is native to countries such as Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and limited areas of Spain and Malta. It thrives in arid and semi-arid Mediterranean climates, often dominating the landscape of lower mountain slopes where other vegetation struggles to survive.

Botanically, the sandarac tree possesses scale-like leaves that are flattened and arranged in sets of four, a structural adaptation to conserve moisture. Its cones are woody with four scales that open in a cross-like pattern, ensuring efficient seed dispersal. The tree is notable for its vigorous epicormic growth, allowing it to regenerate from its stump after fires or logging.
