It is essentially a robust perennial plant that thrives in specific ecological niches.

The plant originates from the Pacific Northwest of North America, typically found in dry, open woods and rocky slopes. Because of its native environment, the culture requires climates that offer cool, well-ventilated conditions with sufficient drainage. It is not suitable for tropical or highly humid subtropical zones due to its sensitivity to fungal pathogens triggered by poor air circulation.
