The plant originates from the southeastern United States, where it is native to open, sandy habitats and pine barrens. Fertilizer requirements are negligible; in fact, the plant prefers poor soil quality, as excessive nitrogen often inhibits its compact growth habit and reduces its overall stress tolerance.
