Rock sandwort

Rock sandwort (Arenaria stricta) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family. Known for its mat-forming growth habit, this species is highly valued in horticulture for its resilience and ability to thrive in challenging, nutrient-poor soil conditions where other species might struggle.

The plant originates from parts of North America, where it typically inhabits sandy soils, rocky barrens, and dry, open meadows. Its natural distribution demonstrates an evolutionary adaptation to well-drained, acidic to neutral soil profiles and high exposure to sunlight, making it a reliable choice for xeriscaping or rock garden projects.

Botanically, Arenaria stricta is characterized by its stiff, linear leaves and slender stems that form low, compact mounds.
