Calico flower

Aristolochia elegans Mast., commonly known as the calico flower or white-veined Dutchman's pipe, is a vigorous perennial climbing vine in the Aristolochiaceae family. It is highly valued for its striking, pipe-shaped blooms that exhibit a complex, mottled appearance, making it a favorite for exotic garden displays.

Native to Brazil and other parts of South America, the plant thrives in warm, humid climates. In regions outside its native range, it is often cultivated as an annual climber or as a conservatory plant in pots. It is known for its rapid growth rate, which allows it to cover vertical structures in a single season.

The botanical structure of the plant features ovate, heart-shaped leaves and distinct, solitary flowers. The calyx of the flower is swollen and bent, which serves as a mechanism to temporarily trap pollinators, ensuring cross-pollination. The plant produces long, dehiscent capsules that contain numerous flat, winged seeds.

Cultivation requires fertile, well-draining soil and a position with partial shade. While it prefers consistent moisture, it is sensitive to waterlogging.
