Description
Mountain arnica (Arnica montana L.) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Known for its medicinal properties, this crop contains essential sesquiterpene lactones and flavonoids, which are highly valued in the pharmaceutical industry for their anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antiseptic applications.
The plant originates from the mountainous regions of Europe, thriving in cool, humid climates and acidic, nutrient-poor grasslands. For agricultural production, the main challenge is to mimic these specific habitat conditions. Cultivation success depends heavily on site selection, as the plant does not tolerate high-nutrient or neutral-to-alkaline soil conditions common in standard farm lands.
Botanically, it consists of a basal rosette of leaves and an erect stem that can reach up to 60 cm in height. The inflorescence is a large, yellow flower head that blooms during early to mid-summer. The root system is relatively shallow, which makes the plant highly susceptible to drought stress and necessitates consistent soil moisture management throughout the growing season.
Agrotechnical requirements are strict:
- Soil pH: Must be acidic (4.5–6.0).
- Light exposure: Full sun is preferred but requires moist soil.
- Spacing: Sufficient room to prevent inter-plant competition for moisture.
- Propagation: Primarily by seeds or division of mature rhizomes.
Typical diseases include root and crown rots, especially in poorly drained soils where fungi like Fusarium can proliferate. Pests such as aphids and spider mites can damage the foliage and reduce overall yield. Effective management involves careful weed control and a balanced irrigation strategy, as competition from common field weeds often outpaces the slow initial growth of arnica seedlings.
