Nilgiri wormwood (Artemisia nilagirica) is a perennial herb or subshrub belonging to the Asteraceae family. Known for its aromatic and medicinal properties, this species is highly valued in regions where it is cultivated for its bioactive compounds, particularly its essential oils, which have significant industrial and pharmaceutical potential.

The plant is native to the mountainous regions of Asia, specifically the Nilgiri Hills in Southern India, from which its name is derived. It thrives in temperate to subtropical climates and is typically found in high-altitude environments. Its distribution is closely linked to specific topographical conditions that provide adequate humidity and soil drainage.

Botanically, it is a robust plant that can grow up to 1.5 to 2 meters in height. The foliage is densely covered with trichomes, giving it a grayish-green appearance. The leaves are pinnately divided and emit a potent, characteristic scent. During the flowering season, it produces numerous small, yellowish flower heads arranged in terminal panicles, which are highly attractive to local insect populations.

Agronomic success for this crop depends on soil quality and light availability. Nilgiri wormwood prefers well-drained, fertile soil and requires full sun exposure to maximize the accumulation of essential oils.
