Redstem wormwood

Redstem wormwood (Artemisia scoparia Waldst. & Kit.) is an annual or biennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Known for its distinct growth habit and chemical composition, this species has gained attention both for its ecological role in land rehabilitation and its therapeutic applications in modern medicine.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by a bushy appearance with highly branched stems that can reach heights of up to one meter. The foliage is finely dissected, providing the plant with a feathery texture. During the flowering stage, the plant produces numerous small, yellowish or reddish-tinged flower heads arranged in a paniculate inflorescence, giving the field a characteristic appearance.

Native to vast regions across Eurasia, this plant thrives in diverse environments ranging from sandy steppes to dry hillsides. It is highly valued for its ability to grow in poor, alkaline, or sandy soils where other crops might fail. It requires full sunlight and possesses a deep root system that makes it highly resilient to drought and high temperatures.

From an agronomic perspective, cultivation involves shallow seeding in spring, as the seeds are quite small and require light for germination. Once established, the crop is exceptionally low-maintenance, requiring little to no chemical intervention for pest control. The main challenge in cultivation is the management of initial weed growth, which is addressed through timely mechanical cultivation.
