White genipi, scientifically known as Artemisia umbelliformis, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is a highly valued alpine species, traditionally gathered from the wild, but now increasingly cultivated in specialized agricultural settings to meet market demand for essential oils and medicinal extracts.
The plant originates from the high-altitude mountain ranges of the Alps and the Apennines. It thrives in subalpine and alpine ecosystems, typically found on rocky slopes and calcareous soils at elevations between 1,500 and 3,000 meters. Its cultivation as an agricultural crop focuses on replicating these harsh, light-intensive conditions to ensure secondary metabolite production.
Botanically, it is a small, bushy perennial with silver-grey, deeply divided leaves covered in fine hairs. This pubescence is an adaptation to reduce water loss and protect against high-altitude solar radiation. Its inflorescences consist of small, rounded yellow flower heads that bloom during the short alpine summer, providing a distinct aroma characteristic of the species.
Agricultural requirements include well-drained, porous, and alkaline soils. Unlike traditional row crops, white genipi requires minimal fertilization, as high nutrient levels negatively impact the quality of the essential oil. Irrigation should be carefully managed; water must never stagnate, as the root system is highly susceptible to crown rot in damp conditions.
