Spanish spleenwort (Asplenium hispanicum) is a perennial fern species belonging to the Aspleniaceae family. In botanical and horticultural circles, it is recognized as a distinctive and rare species, often studied for its specialized ecological niche. Unlike common ferns, this species displays unique survival strategies that make it an interesting subject for specialized botanical cultivation.

The native distribution of Asplenium hispanicum is primarily concentrated in the rocky regions of Spain. As a lithophyte, it naturally inhabits crevices and limestone fissures in arid environments. This natural habitat defines the plant's biological requirements, as it is evolved to thrive in low-nutrient, high-drainage environments with significant airflow around the root system.

Botanically, the species is characterized by small, stiff, and often grayish-green fronds designed to minimize water loss. The plant grows from a compact, scaly rhizome that anchors firmly into rock substrates. These morphological traits are evolutionary adaptations to the harsh, wind-swept, and sun-exposed environments of the Iberian Peninsula's mountain ranges.

Cultivation requires replicating these rugged conditions in a greenhouse or indoor environment. The potting medium must be highly inorganic, consisting largely of crushed stone, limestone chips, and minimal organic matter. Proper drainage is critical; even slight moisture stagnation is detrimental to the plant's long-term health and often leads to irreversible root decay.

Horticulturally, this species is mainly utilized in specialized botanical collections and alpine gardens. It is rarely grown commercially due to its specific environmental demands. Common pests include mealybugs and scale insects, while fungal pathogens, such as root rot, are the most frequent cause of plant mortality, usually resulting from improper irrigation or inadequate air ventilation.
