Cold milkvetch (Astragalus frigidus) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. Renowned for its exceptional cold tolerance, this species is native to arctic and alpine regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Its ability to thrive in challenging environments makes it an interesting candidate for forage research in northern latitude agricultural systems.
The plant originates from the mountainous and tundra regions of Eurasia and North America. It is naturally adapted to short growing seasons and cold climates, where it often colonizes rocky outcrops and alpine meadows. Because of its hardy nature, it is considered a potential source of biomass and soil stabilization in territories where conventional leguminous crops fail to establish.

While it is highly winter-hardy, productivity can be boosted by modest applications of phosphorus, which supports root growth and symbiotic nitrogen fixation.
In terms of agricultural use, Cold milkvetch is mainly utilized as a nutritious forage crop for livestock, including reindeer and cattle in northern grazing systems.
