Timber milkvetch

Timber milkvetch (Astragalus miser) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Fabaceae (legume) family. It is a highly resilient species, well-adapted to the challenging environmental conditions of mountain ranges and rocky slopes, where it often forms a stable part of the local vegetation.

The plant is native to Western North America, with an extensive distribution range stretching across various high-altitude terrains. Its ability to thrive in poor, rocky soils has allowed it to become a prominent feature in the natural grasslands and sagebrush steppe environments of the western United States and Canada.

Botanically, it is characterized by a deep taproot, which allows it to access water reserves far beneath the surface. Cultivation efforts generally focus on utilizing its hardiness for soil stabilization, although its growth habits require careful management to ensure it does not become invasive in specific niches.

Its agricultural value is significantly limited by its toxicity to livestock. The plant produces aliphatic nitro compounds, which are potent toxins. If ingested by grazing animals like sheep, cattle, or horses, it can cause severe health issues, including neurological symptoms and weight loss.
