Description
Pendant milkvetch (Astragalus penduliflorus) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae). It is a valuable forage crop naturally found in the forest and alpine zones of Eurasia. The plant is distinguished by its high winter hardiness and its ability to adapt successfully to challenging environmental conditions.
Botanically, this plant is characterized by erect stems ranging from 40 to 100 cm in height and complex odd-pinnate leaves. The primary feature of this species is its pendulous raceme inflorescences with yellowish flowers, which give the plant a distinct appearance. It possesses a strong taproot system that allows the plant to extract moisture from deep soil layers and effectively stabilize the terrain.
The crop prefers a temperate climate and well-lit areas. Pendant milkvetch is relatively undemanding regarding soil quality, though it achieves the best yields on well-drained loamy and sandy soils with a neutral or slightly alkaline pH. It shows resistance to short-term drought but is highly sensitive to waterlogging or stagnant soil moisture.
Agronomic management includes preparing a weed-free seedbed and sowing seeds at a depth of 2–3 cm. During the first year of growth, the plant develops slowly as it invests energy in root biomass, so timely inter-row cultivation is essential. In subsequent years, the plant regrows vigorously in early spring, producing significant green forage that can be harvested during the flowering stage.
The economic value of pendant milkvetch is primarily linked to livestock production. It serves as an excellent component for hayfields and pastures due to its high nutritional value and palatability for livestock. Additionally, the plant acts as a strong nectar source for bees and is utilized in the biological reclamation of degraded lands.
