Grey saltbush (Atriplex cinerea) is a perennial herbaceous plant or subshrub belonging to the Amaranthaceae family, subfamily Chenopodioideae. In agricultural regions characterized by high levels of soil salinity, this crop is considered a promising candidate for reclaiming marginal lands.
The plant originates from coastal regions of Australia, where it has adapted to the harsh conditions of sandy and saline soils. In its natural environment, the grey saltbush thrives along shorelines, efficiently utilizing the mineral resources of the substrate and enduring periodic droughts due to its extensive root system.
Botanically, the crop is a branched shrub with greyish-green leaves covered in a characteristic powdery coating (trichomes), which helps the plant reflect excessive solar radiation.
