Turkmen orache (Atriplex turcomanica) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Amaranthaceae family. It is a highly specialized halophyte, evolved to thrive in harsh, saline, and arid environments where conventional crops fail to survive.
The plant originates from the arid regions of Central Asia. Its natural distribution is concentrated in the desert and semi-desert zones of countries such as Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. These areas are characterized by extreme temperature fluctuations and very low annual precipitation, defining the plant's robust nature.
Botanically, this species is noted for its grayish foliage covered with small, scaly hairs that reduce water loss. It grows as a semi-shrub or a branched herb. Its root system is exceptionally deep for its size, allowing the plant to reach moisture stored in deep soil horizons, which is crucial for surviving summer droughts.
Agrotechnical requirements are remarkably low. As an extremophile, it does not require fertilizers or sophisticated irrigation systems.
