Chinese aucuba

Chinese aucuba (Aucuba chinensis) is an evergreen shrub belonging to the Garryaceae family. It is highly valued in horticulture for its dense, glossy foliage and its ability to thrive in shaded environments where many other flowering shrubs would struggle.

Native to the subtropical forests of China and surrounding regions in Southeast Asia, this species has adapted to understory conditions. Its distribution range is typically limited to humid mountainous areas where moderate temperatures and high humidity levels prevail throughout the year.

Botanically, it is a dioecious shrub, reaching heights of 2 to 3 meters. The leaves are characteristically leathery, often with serrated edges, and provide a strong structural element to any planting scheme. The plant produces small panicles of flowers followed by bright red drupes on female plants if a male pollinator is present.

For optimal growth, Aucuba chinensis requires well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. It is crucial to position the plant in partial to full shade, as exposure to intense direct sunlight can scorch the leaves and significantly diminish the plant's aesthetic value.

Common horticultural challenges include managing spider mites and scale insects, which are particularly prevalent in dry conditions. Additionally, growers must avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot, as the root system is sensitive to poor drainage. Regular mulching is recommended to maintain soil moisture levels and provide nutrients.
