Azima tetracantha

Azima tetracantha is a hardy, evergreen, thorny shrub that belongs to the Salvadoraceae family. Known commonly as the needle bush, it is highly valued for its ability to survive in harsh, saline-rich coastal environments where few other plants can thrive.

The native distribution of this species spans across the tropical regions of Africa, Madagascar, and India. It predominantly inhabits dry, sandy areas and scrublands. Due to its natural adaptation to stress, it has become a plant of interest for ecological restoration projects in semi-arid zones.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by a dense, spreading growth habit. Its branches are armed with four long, sharp thorns at each leaf node, which effectively protect it from herbivores. The leaves are evergreen and leathery, and the plant produces small, inconspicuous flowers followed by spherical, white, berry-like fruits.

Cultivation requires full sun exposure and well-drained, sandy or loamy soils. While it is extremely drought-tolerant once established, young plants require consistent moisture for proper root development. In colder climates, Azima tetracantha must be grown in a greenhouse, as it cannot withstand frost.
