Baillonella toxisperma, commonly referred to as the Moabi tree, is a massive tropical hardwood species belonging to the Sapotaceae family. It is recognized as one of the tallest and most majestic trees in the Congo Basin, often serving as a key indicator of undisturbed primary rainforest ecosystems. The species is highly valued for both its high-quality timber and its lipid-rich seeds.

The natural range of this species is restricted to the moist tropical forests of Central Africa, including countries such as Cameroon, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo. It thrives in regions with stable, high temperatures and significant annual rainfall. Because Moabi trees grow very slowly, their presence in a forest indicates a long period of ecological stability, making them a priority for conservation efforts.

Botanically, Baillonella toxisperma is characterized by a straight, cylindrical trunk that can reach heights of up to 70 meters. The tree produces large, fleshy fruits containing seeds rich in oil, often referred to as "Karité du Congo." The foliage is evergreen, and the tree often sheds leaves in patterns regulated by subtle changes in local moisture and light availability.

Cultivation and silviculture are challenging due to the tree's slow growth rate and specific symbiotic requirements with soil mycorrhizae. Agricultural efforts are currently focused on reforestation and the implementation of sustainable harvesting techniques. The tree does not tolerate full sun in its youth, requiring the canopy of larger forest structures to survive and thrive during its early developmental stages.
