It is a holoparasite, meaning it lacks chlorophyll entirely and relies on the roots of specific host trees to obtain the nutrients, water, and carbohydrates required for its growth and reproduction.

The native range of this species is primarily located in the mountain forests of tropical and subtropical Asia, including regions in China and India. It thrives in high-humidity environments, where the dense cover of forest trees provides the necessary root structures for the parasite to establish its connection.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by a fleshy, tuberous rhizome that remains largely subterranean. The above-ground parts consist solely of thick, fleshy flower stalks. These structures bear numerous small flowers, which are the main visible manifestation of the plant during its reproductive phase. It does not possess any leaves, as they have been lost through the evolutionary process of parasitism.

The cultivation of Balanophora polyandra is not practiced in commercial agriculture, nor is it feasible given its obligate parasitic nature. To thrive, the plant requires a highly specific ecological niche, maintaining a delicate balance with its host tree. Any attempt to transplant or grow it outside of its natural habitat typically fails because it lacks the capacity to photosynthesize or acquire nutrients from the soil independently.
