False dittany

Ballota pseudodictamnus, commonly known as false dittany, is a perennial evergreen subshrub belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It is highly esteemed in horticulture for its distinct velvety, silver-grey foliage, which provides year-round textural interest and contrast in planting schemes.

The plant is native to the Mediterranean basin, particularly in Greece and the surrounding Aegean islands. Its natural habitat is typically rocky, limestone-rich terrain and open, dry scrublands. This evolutionary background makes the plant an ideal candidate for gardens featuring xeriscaping and sustainable planting designs.

Botanically, the plant grows into a compact, rounded mound typically reaching 40 to 60 centimeters in height. Its leaves are wrinkled and ovate, covered in soft, white, woolly hairs. The flowers, appearing in whorls during late spring and summer, are encased in characteristic papery, funnel-shaped calyces that remain decorative long after the flowers have faded.

Regarding agronomic requirements, false dittany thrives in full sun and well-draining soil. It is exceptionally tolerant of poor, stony, and alkaline substrates. Excessive irrigation and poor drainage are the primary risks, as they can lead to root rot. Successful cultivation requires a light-handed approach to fertilization, as rich soil often results in leggy, less durable growth.

In landscape design, it serves as a robust groundcover, container plant, or mid-border filler. While it is generally resistant to most pests and diseases due to its pubescence and aromatic foliage, stagnant humidity during the winter months remains its main enemy. Pruning after the blooming period is highly recommended to encourage dense, bushy growth for the following season.
