Timor black bamboo (Bambusa lako) is a distinctive species of clumping bamboo belonging to the Poaceae family. It is widely recognized for its striking, glossy black culms that turn from green to a deep, dark purple-black as they mature, making it one of the most visually impressive species in the bamboo world.
The species originates from the island of Timor in Indonesia. Thriving in a tropical climate, it requires high humidity and consistent warmth to reach its full potential. While primarily grown in tropical regions, it has become a popular ornamental choice in mild subtropical areas where frost is not a major concern for the plant's survival.
Botanically, it features a sympodial (clumping) growth habit, meaning it does not spread aggressively like runner bamboos. While it is highly moisture-loving, it cannot tolerate waterlogged conditions, which lead to root rot.
