Description
Wolfberry, scientifically classified as Lycium barbarum L., is a deciduous woody shrub belonging to the Solanaceae family. Often referred to as the goji berry plant, this species has gained significant agricultural importance due to its nutrient-dense fruit, which is highly sought after in the global nutraceutical and food processing markets.
The plant is native to China, particularly the Ningxia region, but it has naturalized in many temperate regions across the globe. Due to its vigorous root system and ability to tolerate diverse soil types, including saline and alkaline soils, it is frequently employed in land reclamation projects in addition to commercial berry production.
Botanically, the plant grows into a sprawling shrub reaching heights of 2 to 3 meters, characterized by arching branches and small, elliptical leaves. The flowers are typically trumpet-shaped and purple or light violet, appearing throughout the summer. The fruits are bright red to orange, oblong berries that contain numerous small seeds and possess a unique, slightly sweet profile.
Successful commercial cultivation requires full sun exposure and well-draining soil to prevent root rot. While the plant is drought-tolerant once established, irrigation management is critical during the fruit-set phase to ensure high yield and berry quality. Regular pruning is essential to maintain a manageable plant architecture, facilitate harvesting, and improve sunlight penetration into the canopy.
