Hairy bassia (lat. Bassia hirsuta) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Amaranthaceae family. In agricultural science, it is recognized as a significant halophyte, capable of thriving in highly saline soils where standard crops fail to establish, making it a critical subject of study in arid-land management.

Originating from Mediterranean and Central Asian coastal and inland saline areas, the plant has spread across various arid zones globally. Its natural distribution is closely linked to saline habitats, such as salt marshes, coastal dunes, and alkaline steppe regions, where it often outcompetes other vegetation under high-salinity conditions.

Botanically, the species is distinguished by its branched stem, which is covered in dense hairs, providing a protective layer against moisture loss. The leaves are succulent, an evolutionary adaptation to salt-rich environments. The plant develops a deep taproot, which allows it to access water reserves situated well below the dry surface level of the soil.

Regarding agrotechnical requirements, the plant is undemanding but highly invasive in susceptible landscapes. Management focuses on preventing seed dispersal and disrupting the taproot cycle. Deep plowing and the integration of competitive forage crops are common methods used to mitigate its prevalence in agricultural fields located in saline-affected areas.

While often viewed as a weed, its economic significance lies in its potential use in phytoremediation on salt-degraded lands. In some nomadic pastoral systems, it may provide forage for small ruminants, though it is not a commercially cultivated crop. Pests and diseases typically include those common to Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae, such as various beetles and fungal pathogens that affect stem integrity.
