Bearss lime

Citrus latifolia (Yu. Tanaka) Tanaka

Description

Bearss lime (Citrus latifolia) is a significant evergreen fruit tree belonging to the Rutaceae family. Commonly referred to as the Persian or Tahitian lime, it is the most widely grown lime variety for global commercial markets. Its popularity is largely due to the fruit's seedless nature, juicy flesh, and extended shelf life, which surpass those of the smaller Key lime varieties.

The origin of this species is traced back to a hybrid lineage involving Citrus aurantiifolia and either citron or lemon. While its exact geographic evolution is debated, it has become a staple crop in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, with major production hubs in Mexico and the United States. Its ability to tolerate slightly cooler conditions than other limes allows for a broader cultivation range.

Botanically, the tree is characterized by a moderate, spreading habit with dense, dark green foliage and noticeably few thorns, which distinguishes it from many other citrus species. The flowers are white and highly fragrant, often blooming multiple times throughout the year. The fruit itself is medium-sized, ellipsoidal in shape, with a smooth, glossy green rind that turns pale yellow when fully mature.

Successful cultivation of Bearss lime requires well-draining, fertile soil with an optimal pH range of 6.0 to 7.0. The crop thrives in full sun and requires consistent moisture, especially during the fruit development stage. Agronomic management involves structured pruning to maintain tree vigor and prevent overlapping branches, as well as regular nitrogen-heavy fertilization to sustain continuous production cycles.

The fruit is used extensively in beverages, culinary preparations, and the chemical industry for its essential oils. Maintaining tree health is critical, as the crop is susceptible to various pests and diseases that require professional management:

  • Citrus whitefly — a common pest that sucks sap from the undersides of leaves.
  • Asian citrus psyllid — a major vector for serious bacterial diseases.
  • Phytophthora root rot — a soil-borne disease triggered by poor drainage.
  • Citrus Canker — a highly contagious bacterial disease that affects fruits and foliage.
