Beaucarnea recurvata, commonly known as the ponytail palm, is a distinctive succulent belonging to the Asparagaceae family. Although it resembles a palm tree, it is actually a member of the asparagus family. The plant is easily recognized by its bulbous, swollen trunk base known as a caudex, which acts as a water storage organ to survive in arid climates.

Native to eastern Mexico, this species thrives in dry, rocky terrain. Its natural distribution is characterized by high light intensity and sparse rainfall, which has shaped its specialized physiology. As a cultivated plant, it has become a staple for interior design and xeriscaping due to its architectural form and ability to endure low-maintenance conditions.

Botanically, the plant features long, thin, leathery leaves that curve downwards, resembling a ponytail.
