Berardia lanuginosa, commonly known as woolly berardia, is a distinctive perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. The origin of this species is strictly linked to the alpine and subalpine belts of the Southwestern Alps. It is primarily found in high-altitude environments such as rocky screes and limestone outcrops, where its survival is enabled by specialized physiological adaptations that allow it to cope with extreme temperature fluctuations.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a compact, rosette-forming habit. Its most notable feature is the dense, woolly indumentum covering the foliage. This layer of hairs provides essential protection against UV radiation, prevents excessive transpiration in the thin mountain air, and acts as a mechanical barrier against frost damage.
In terms of cultivation requirements, the species is highly demanding and requires specialized conditions. It thrives in well-drained, nutrient-poor limestone soils with significant mineral content. Providing adequate air circulation and preventing soil moisture saturation are critical factors for successfully maintaining this plant in any semi-controlled or nursery environment.
