Francis-Ferdinand barberry

The Francis-Ferdinand barberry (Berberis francisci-fernandi) is an impressive deciduous shrub belonging to the Berberidaceae family. Known for its robust growth habit and significant height, which can reach up to 3-4 meters, it is a highly valued ornamental plant in professional and private horticulture.

This species is native to the mountainous regions of Western China. Its natural habitat is characterized by mountain slopes and temperate climates, which contributes to the plant's high cold tolerance and overall resilience. Due to its origin, it thrives in environments that experience a distinct winter dormancy.

Botanically, the plant is recognized by its sturdy, spiny branches and large, obovate leaves. It produces racemes of bright yellow flowers in late spring, which are followed by vibrant red fruits.
