Henry's barberry (Berberis henryana) is an ornamental evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub belonging to the Berberidaceae family. Named after the botanist Augustine Henry, this species is highly regarded for its dense growth habit and architectural value in landscaping. It provides year-round interest due to its thick foliage and structural form.
The plant is native to China, where it grows in mountain regions. It has been introduced to gardens worldwide, particularly in temperate regions where it can thrive given the right microclimate. Ideally, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun to partial shade, sheltered from harsh, drying winter winds to prevent leaf damage and ensure healthy growth throughout the year.
Botanically, it features spiny stems and leathery, lanceolate leaves that often possess a glossy appearance. During the blooming season, the shrub produces clusters of small yellow flowers which are followed by dark berries in the autumn.
