Three-leaved barberry (Latin: Berberis trifoliolata) is an evergreen shrub belonging to the Berberidaceae family. It is a highly resilient plant characterized by its rigid, trifoliate leaves with sharp spines, forming a dense and protective structure that makes it an excellent choice for natural fencing and landscaping in arid environments.

The species is native to the southwestern United States, particularly Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico, as well as northern Mexico. It is specifically adapted to desert and semi-desert habitats, growing naturally on rocky slopes and limestone outcrops, which reflects its high tolerance for heat, intense sun, and extremely dry soil conditions.

Botanically, this shrub can grow up to 2.5 meters tall. Its growth habit is characterized by stiff, woody stems and leaves that maintain a blue-green or greyish hue throughout the year. The bright yellow flowers produced in the spring contrast sharply with the foliage, eventually developing into edible, tart red berries that are a vital food source for local wildlife.

Regarding agrotechnical requirements, the three-leaved barberry is not demanding but insists on well-drained soil. It thrives in soils with a neutral to alkaline pH and is intolerant of waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot. To ensure optimal growth, it should be planted in full sun, as shade will significantly reduce its density and flower production.
