Betony

Betony (Betonica officinalis L.) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Historically regarded as a panacea, it is now cultivated both as a high-value medicinal crop and an ornamental plant due to its hardiness and therapeutic chemical profile.

The plant originates from Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. It is highly adaptable to various temperate climates, naturally occurring in meadows, woodlands, and scrublands. Its cultivation is viable in a wide range of zones where it can benefit from full sun to partial shade conditions.

Botanically, Betony is characterized by a square stem, toothed basal leaves, and dense, terminal spikes of rose-purple flowers. The root system is fibrous and rhizomatous, allowing the plant to spread and persist for many years in the same location. It typically reaches heights of 30 to 80 centimeters during the growing season.

Successful cultivation requires deep, well-drained loamy soils with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. While it is relatively drought-tolerant once established, providing consistent moisture during the early growth stages is essential for biomass development. Maintenance is primarily focused on controlling weeds and ensuring adequate space between plants to prevent fungal infections.
