Bog birch (Betula humilis) is a deciduous shrub that belongs to the Betulaceae family. Unlike common tree-sized birches, this species manifests as a multi-stemmed, low-growing shrub typically reaching heights of 1 to 2 meters. It is highly adapted to temperate and subarctic environments, making it a distinct member of the Betula genus.
The native range of this plant extends across northern and central Eurasia, where it is primarily found in wetlands, fens, and along the edges of peat bogs. Its evolutionary history is deeply linked to saturated soil conditions, allowing it to thrive in habitats that would be unsuitable for many other woody ornamental plants. This adaptation makes it an excellent choice for specialized garden environments.
