Water birch (Betula occidentalis) is a deciduous tree species belonging to the Betulaceae family. It is a highly resilient species, particularly well-adapted to moisture-rich environments, which makes it a unique and valuable subject for forestry and landscape architecture in riparian zones.

Native to western North America, its range extends across the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada, and into the Pacific Northwest. The species typically thrives in cool, mountainous regions at elevations ranging from low valleys to high subalpine slopes, demonstrating significant genetic plasticity in response to varying climatic conditions.

The botanical structure of the Water birch is defined by its reddish-brown to almost black bark that does not exfoliate in thin sheets like other birch species.
