The native habitat of this species is East Asia, specifically the Russian Far East, China, the Korean Peninsula, and Japan. It thrives in rocky and mountainous terrains, often colonizing steep, well-drained slopes at elevations where the soil is too skeletal for more common fast-growing tree species to establish.
