The Virginia round-leaf birch (Betula uber) is a critically endangered species of tree within the Betulaceae family. It is arguably the rarest species of birch in the world, once believed to be extinct for over sixty years until its rediscovery in the 1970s. This species serves as a significant example of the importance of protecting narrow-range endemic plants.
The natural habitat of Betula uber is extremely restricted, found primarily in Smyth County, Virginia, USA. It prefers specific riparian zones, typically growing along small, rocky streams where the substrate is consistent and provides sufficient moisture. The geographical isolation of the population has made it highly vulnerable to habitat fragmentation and anthropogenic impacts.
Botanically, this birch is distinguished by its small, rounded to ovate leaves with serrated margins and its smooth, dark brown to cherry-colored bark.
