Queen's tears

Queen's tears (Billbergia speciosa) is an eye-catching species belonging to the Bromeliaceae family. It is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant that naturally leads an epiphytic or terrestrial lifestyle. In cultivation, it is prized for its decorative rosette of stiff, arching leaves and its unique, drooping inflorescences that provide a distinctly exotic aesthetic.

The native range of this species encompasses the tropical forests of South America, with the primary habitat located in Brazil. In their natural environment, these plants typically grow in the forest understory or attached to tree trunks. Due to their high biological adaptability, they have become popular ornamental plants suitable for greenhouses and indoor container collections.

Botanically, the plant forms a basal rosette of leathery leaves, often featuring finely serrated edges. Its most prominent feature is the inflorescence, which emerges from the center of the rosette, bearing rose-red bracts and tubular flowers with striking green or blue tips. The root system is relatively limited, a common characteristic of many epiphytic species that rely on leaf rosettes to absorb moisture.

The agronomy of this culture requires specific environmental controls. The plant thrives in bright, indirect light, avoiding harsh direct sun exposure. The growing medium must be loose, porous, and acidic (ideally a specialized bromeliad mix or a blend of bark, moss, and leaf mold). Watering should be directed mainly into the central tank or rosette using soft, room-temperature water, ensuring that soil waterlogging is avoided.

The utility of this plant is strictly ornamental. It is widely used in interior landscaping as a container plant capable of enhancing spaces with its pendulous flower clusters. Common management challenges for gardeners include:

• infestations of scale insects and mealybugs;
• root rot caused by poor drainage or overwatering;
• fungal leaf spots resulting from high humidity and inadequate air circulation.
