Mountain knotweed

Mountain knotweed (Bistorta amplexicaulis) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Polygonaceae family. Widely recognized for its architectural form and vibrant flower spikes, it has become a staple in modern perennial borders and landscape design projects across the globe.

The species originates from the Himalayan mountain ranges. Because of its native alpine habitat, it is exceptionally hardy and capable of thriving in varied climates, provided that moisture requirements are met during the warmer growing months.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its clumping habit, often reaching heights of over one meter. The leaves are ovate with a heart-shaped base, uniquely clasping the stem, which explains its scientific epithet. The inflorescences are dense, slender, and long-lasting spikes that appear from mid-summer until the first frost.

Cultivation requires fertile, moisture-retentive, and well-draining soil. While it prefers full sun, it can adapt to partial shade, especially in hotter regions. Good agricultural practice involves generous watering during dry spells and applying mulch to the root zone to maintain soil temperature and moisture levels.
