The plant originates from the tropical and subtropical regions of East and Southeast Asia, with a natural distribution spanning from Japan and China to India. In the wild, Blyxa japonica thrives in shallow, stagnant, or slow-moving waters such as marshes, ponds, and even rice paddies, adapting well to nutrient-rich, muddy substrates where it can anchor firmly.
