The African fan palm (Borassus aethiopum) is a prominent tree species belonging to the Arecaceae family. Known for its imposing stature, this palm can reach heights of up to 30 meters. A distinctive botanical feature of this species is its trunk, which is covered by leaf bases when young but becomes remarkably smooth and develops a characteristic swelling at the mid-section as the tree matures.

This species is indigenous to the tropical regions of Africa, where it is commonly found in savannah woodlands and floodplains. It is highly adapted to seasonal climates and demonstrates significant drought tolerance. The palm thrives in full sun, requiring ample light exposure to maintain vigorous growth and fruit production throughout the year.

Regarding cultivation, the African fan palm prefers deep, well-drained soils, typically favoring alluvial deposits. Agrotechnical management requires patience, as the species exhibits slow early development while establishing a deep root system. Planting density must be carefully calculated to allow for the massive canopy spread of adult specimens as they mature over several decades.
