Boston fern

Boston fern (lat. Nephrolepis exaltata) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lomariopsidaceae family. It is a commercially significant ornamental crop valued for its lush foliage and adaptive capabilities in managed environments. Known scientifically as Nephrolepis exaltata, it is one of the most widely cultivated ferns globally.

Originating from tropical regions of the Americas, Africa, and Southeast Asia, this species thrives in humid forest habitats. In its native range, it grows terrestrially or as an epiphyte, often found near swamps and rocky areas. Today, it is produced in high volumes within greenhouses, where growers optimize conditions to replicate its tropical natural habitat.

Botanically, the plant consists of a short, creeping rhizome that produces long, arching fronds. These fronds are pinnately divided into numerous small leaflets. The root system is relatively shallow but fibrous, necessitating a growth medium that retains moisture while allowing for sufficient aeration to prevent root rot during intensive cultivation.

Agronomic requirements are centered on maintaining high ambient humidity and stable temperatures, typically between 18°C and 25°C. The soil medium must be rich in organic matter, porous, and maintained at a slightly acidic pH level. Overwatering or poor drainage is the primary cause of decline in commercial fern crops, as it encourages fungal pathogens and root hypoxia.

Industrially, this crop is used extensively in interior landscaping and air purification, as it effectively filters volatile organic compounds. Common agricultural pests that affect the yield include spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects. Maintaining optimal hygiene and consistent moisture levels is the best strategy for integrated pest management in commercial production facilities.
