Bougainvillea spectabilis

Bougainvillea spectabilis x Bougainvillea glabra

Description

Bougainvillea spectabilis, known as the Great Bougainvillea, is a vigorous evergreen woody vine belonging to the Nyctaginaceae family. This species, often hybridized with Bougainvillea glabra, is highly prized for its spectacular display of vibrant, papery bracts that surround its small, inconspicuous flowers.

Native to the tropical regions of South America, particularly Brazil, this plant has spread globally across tropical and subtropical landscapes. It is extensively cultivated as an ornamental feature in gardens, often used for climbing walls, pergolas, or as pruned hedges, contributing significantly to the aesthetic appeal of warm-climate architecture.

The botanical structure of the plant is defined by its thorny, woody stems and large, heart-shaped leaves. The main feature, however, is the colorful bracts which can range from vivid magenta and purple to red, orange, and white. These bracts serve to attract pollinators and are the primary reason for the plant's widespread horticultural popularity.

Agrotechnical management of the species requires full sun exposure to thrive and produce flowers. It performs best in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils. Irrigation should be managed carefully; while it needs water during the growth phase, it is drought-tolerant once established. Pruning is essential to maintain its shape, control its rapid growth, and encourage new blooming wood.

In terms of health, the plant is susceptible to pests such as aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites, particularly in greenhouse or container environments. Fungal infections, such as root rot, often occur due to poor drainage or excessive soil moisture. Proper cultural practices, including adequate ventilation and precise watering, are the primary methods for ensuring plant health.

  • Light requirement: Full sun (at least 6 hours daily).
  • Soil type: Rich, sandy loam with excellent drainage.
  • Pruning: Heavy pruning encouraged after blooming.
  • Fertilization: High-potassium fertilizers to promote flowering.
