Description
Buffalograss (Bouteloua dactyloides), formerly classified as Buchloe dactyloides, is a perennial stoloniferous grass belonging to the Poaceae family. It is recognized as one of the most important native forage species of the North American Great Plains, highly valued for its exceptional ability to withstand heat and moisture stress.
The native range of this species spans from northern Mexico through the central United States into southern Canada. It is ecologically significant as the dominant component of shortgrass prairie ecosystems, having evolved under the grazing pressure of large herbivores like the American bison, which contributed to its hardy nature.
Botanically, buffalograss is a low-growing, dioecious plant, meaning male and female flowers are typically found on separate plants. The plant spreads via surface runners or stolons, forming a dense sod that is extremely effective at suppressing weeds and preventing soil erosion in arid environments.
Agricultural requirements focus on full sun exposure and well-drained soils. While it tolerates a wide range of soil textures from clays to loams, it thrives best in fine-textured, fertile soils. Establishment can be achieved through seeding or sodding, although it requires weed control during the seedling stage because of its slow initial growth rate compared to other warm-season grasses.
The primary agricultural use is for low-maintenance pastures and erosion control on rangelands. Beyond its forage utility, buffalograss is increasingly used in sustainable landscaping and water-wise turf management. Pests such as mealybugs and mites are occasionally reported, but generally, the crop is highly resistant to standard turfgrass diseases when managed under appropriate irrigation and fertilization levels.
