It is characterized by a long harvest window, as leaves can be plucked progressively without destroying the entire plant, provided the growing point remains intact.
Successful kale production requires fertile, well-draining soil with a neutral pH level. The crop performs best in cool-season conditions but is remarkably resilient. Agricultural management includes sufficient nitrogen application during the vegetative phase and consistent moisture to prevent leaf toughness. Proper spacing is essential to ensure adequate airflow and reduce humidity around the leaves.
In terms of utilization, kale is versatile in both fresh and processed forms. Commercial production is often hindered by pests such as cabbage worms, aphids, and flea beetles. Disease prevention primarily centers on crop rotation to avoid soil-borne pathogens like clubroot, alongside balanced fertilization to support the natural resistance of the plants.
