Brazilian plume flower

The Brazilian plume flower (Justicia carnea) is a perennial ornamental shrub belonging to the Acanthaceae family. Widely recognized for its striking, feather-like pink or crimson inflorescences, this plant is a staple in greenhouse and conservatory cultivation, prized for its exotic aesthetic appeal and prolonged blooming period.

Native to the humid tropical forests of South America, specifically Brazil, the plant is naturally adapted to warm and humid environments. In temperate climates, it is cultivated exclusively as a potted or container plant, requiring controlled indoor conditions or a greenhouse setup to survive the winter months.

Botanically, the plant develops into a sturdy shrub typically reaching 1 to 1.5 meters in height. Its leaves are large, ovate-lanceolate, and feature deep veins, providing a rich green contrast to the vibrant, tubular flowers that emerge in terminal spikes during the active growing season.

Successful cultivation requires a high-quality, well-draining potting medium with an acidic to neutral pH (6.0–6.5). The species thrives in bright, indirect light. Proper agrotechnical management includes regular fertilization during the growing season and pruning back older stems to encourage denser branching and future flower production.

Management of the species involves vigilance against common agricultural pests and physiological stress factors:
